More than €870,000 for the renovation of the station building in Gardelegen

The state of Saxony-Anhalt is providing around €873,000 in funding for the extensive renovation of the reception building at Gardelegen station (Altmarkkreis Salzwedel). "The money will be used to make the historic station building a centre of attraction again," said Dr. Lydia Hüskens, Minister for Infrastructure and Digital Affairs, today in Gardelegen, as she handed over the notice of approval to the project organiser. The funding is part of the Revita programme, which aims to revitalise railway station buildings in a customer-friendly way.

In addition to the Revita funding, the State is also supporting the project with funds from the Urban Development Programme (around 2.4 million euros), the Minister added. The total cost of the project is around €3.8 million. "The combination of attractive local transport services and modern infrastructure will bring the station building back to life," said Lydia Hüskens, emphasising a key aspect of the extensive government funding.

The building, some of which is more than 150 years old, will not only be preserved for public transport passengers, but will also be renovated in a way that ensures its status as a listed building. There will be a waiting area and public toilets on the ground floor. Bicycle parking, shopping and catering facilities are planned for the adjacent parts of the building. Office space will be provided on the upper floor.

"Mobility means freedom. Freedom also includes a real choice of means of transport. We want people in our country to be able to choose freely between all forms of travel. This requires a well-developed infrastructure: cycle paths as well as roads, including bridges, and of course attractive public transport. We are working on this. Every day. The financial support for the railway station here in Gardelegen is a living example of this," she concluded.

Around 156,000 passengers use Gardelegen station every year. The station is served hourly by regional train 35 (Wolfsburg-Stendal) and PlusBus 100 (Magdeburg-Salzwedel).
